Back to Painting

After a long time of not painting, I finally got inspired. However, I lacked a subject. So I painted a self-portrait (Oil on wood panel, 12 x 16 inches). I might still give it some final touches though.

It is surprising how one can get 'out of shape' in painting. It took quite a long time to get the feeling back. But after a while things got easier. I use the Venetian oil painting style. Using an under painting, I began to build up layers of opaque and transparent paints (glazes and scumbles).

With the Venetian painting method one can achieve an amazing level of depth and details than using other methods. However, this time I tried to paint in a less meticulous way by trying coarser and less 'perfect' brush strokes. No doubt I'm still searching for my own painting style.

UPDATE 8/7/2019: Since everyone that knows me said this painting had no resemblance to me, I decided to work on it a little more. I think it is better now, but I may refine it again later. This has been an interesting exercise, it has shown me that in reality I don’t know how I look.

Coffee Cups Available

I have several coffee cups available for sale. I still don't have a dealer where I can sell coffee cups. So I think I will put up a sale page for them soon (I still need to figure out some ordering/shipping details). But in the meantime, let me know if you like any of these cups and we can take it from there.

Phoenix Tea Shop

I am very happy to announce that my tea ware is now available through Phoenix Tea in Burien. I really recommend phoenix tea if you are ever in need of high quality tea. Even though they sell fine tea, Virginia and Chris are very nice and approachable. They are very knowledgeable and excellent at teaching anything tea related.  If you want to start learning about tea, this is the place to go. And of course, besides tea, they offer lots of quality ceramics.

Lee Kang-Hyo

While looking for inspiration I ran into a nice web page from the San Francisco Museum.  It was an article about an old exhibition featuring Korean artists. To my surprise one of the Artist was Lee Kang-Hyo, someone I really admire. I first knew about this guy from a youtube video. I like his take in life and pottery.

“The work of an artist reflects his or her life. The temperament of a person is influenced by one’s natural environment. When one travels, mountains like the folds of a screen endlessly stretch, enabling one to be in awe of the essence of nature. The constant theme in my work is based on this marvel of nature. Everything that exists has its own reason and beauty. Molding clay with my hands and then painting white slip over the surface is an expression of my dream and my existence at that moment. Finding life’s meaning is a task that is too vast and confusing. It is a struggle and confliction to find the inner self. Life is not that exceptional nor does it contain some great meaning. Yet existence itself is precious and beautiful. Making art is like escaping to find peace of mind.

On the throwing wheel, a concentric circle is made, and then numerous different circular shapes are created. Through this clay, a space and a mass are created. This space contains my life. It is I. There is joy in taking a deep breath and viewing mountains; life is definitely worthwhile just for the fact that I am able to see and exist. I take joy in making things that can be looked at and appreciated. My work is an expression of everything that exists. It is my life itself.”
